Why are ethics important in a career and school environment?
Herman Melville, “said it's better to fail in originality than succeed in imitation”. Academic integrity is key to gain the full college experience. Would one prefer an A doctor who diligently put all his effort into his study or a D doctor who barely made it through medical school and took the easy road to his degree? My choice would be the A doctor without seconding guessing my choice. This question is an example why academic integrity is imperative. It’s highly probably that what we learn in school will be applicable in the professional rolls we seek to attain. Academic integrity helps students apply moral and ethical actions throughout their current college experience.
What is academic dishonesty?
Academic dishonesty is a term used to house various immoral academic related predicaments. Examples of these immortal predicaments are bribery, cheating, plagiarism, duplicated submissions etc. Participation in any dishonest related behavior has a major impact on an individuals career outcomes. The degree will help you get the job but the skills learned in college help you keep the job. A degree is an investment, but it's up to the student to implement moral academic standards to truly see a return on that life altering investment.
How to handle an unethical situation?
If a classmate was cheating on her/his nursing board exam my first strategic step would be to first let them know I am not going to support that decision. The healthcare industry is a vital part of our society, I firmly believe we need well educated professionals in every aspect of healthcare. I will debate with this individual and point out the reasons why knowing the information is more important than just getting a passing grade. Second, I will convince them that taking the test at a later date will be a far more valuable option than cheating. Third, I would go so far as to assist this individual with studying, I would help them implement better study strategies so they are prepared for the test. Academic integrity is fundamental to every career path. “Try not to become an individual of success, but rather an individual of value” (Albert Einstein).
