Introduction:
In the 21st century, social media has become the mainspring of communication; the majority of our society has become dependent on social media. Social media creates do-nothing millionaires habitually, society wouldn't have as many “rich” people if social media didn't exist. Social media has opened the door of opportunity for many individuals, but most overlook what social media takes-away from them. Social media sites and apps not only use the personal data we willingly give them for financial gain; they also pillage the confidence and self esteem of people across the globe one post at a time. The ever-developing standards associated with social media tends to paint an unrealistic view of life, but it also allows those picture perfect moments to be possible. Is social media destroying the general population while building up the few, or is social media creating a better world and giving more people the opportunity to be successful due to the ease of communication that it allows its users to possess?
What are the negative effects of social media?
The negative effects of social media are abundantly evident in modern society: Depression, anorexia, anxiety and many other mental instabilities are trending alongside popular posts. In some extreme cases, social media has led to suicide due to cyber-bullying. Sadly, it happens more often than we think. Social media can open up a whole new world, creating an entirely different character out of an individual but some of those worlds are filled with nightmares. In many modern day cases of slavery the victims who’re enslaved aren’t chosen by race, they are chosen by gender. Posting with to-much detail is a mistake that predators use to their advantage. When a person posts on any social media platform they post to attract people not repel people; the sad story for many young women who had posted with too much detail ends with abduction and sex slavery. Many people do what-ever’s( Photo filters, make-up, fake the photos) necessary to make that post picture perfect which creates a false and unrealistic standard that people loyally follow. Some people sell dreams for free in the modern day market place and profit from it. The information around the negative effects of social-media are exuberant but what good has social media done?
What are the positive effects of social media?
Social media is typically demonized in articles and videos but social media has also brought financial opportunities to the general population that wouldn't have existed if social media didn't exist. Many modern companies can attribute their success to Facebook or Instagram. Strategically posting engaging content, along with a product for sale with-in a niche Facebook group can instantly produce revenue. Proper social media marketing can be a gold mine, all a person needs to do is post and continue to post. Social media allows a person to be connected to a border-less community of people with similar desires, thoughts, and needs instantly. Dating apps have created healthy, long-lasting, confident marriages and will continue creating them for the foreseeable future. What is social media and how can it be both good and bad at the same time?
What is social media and is it a good thing or bad thing?
Social media is a communication tool that allows users to connect with like minded individuals; it is a virtual space that acts as a center of communication. The users of these platforms generate pleasant or unpleasant situations not the platform itself. I believe personal perspective punctuates the content absorbed, for example it's common in the 21st century for people to boast about negative comments in certain situations because the subject( person) of the comment sees the negative response as a good thing. Having “Haters'’ is seen as a good thing in modern times because the individual who has “haters’ believes that they’re making enough of an impression on society to have people envy them. On the other hand some people may take serious offense to a negative comment, people have killed themselves over another’s word. When it comes to social media people tend to be brutally honest because they feel safe to speak freely behind a keyboard, yet many people can't handle criticism due to a lack of self esteem.
Conclusion:
Social media can be as dangerous as you let it be; would you give your address to a random person on the street or hand out promiscuous photos at your local corner store? Treasuring your personal information is key to engaging in a healthy social media experience. Engaging on any social media platform with low self esteem, envy, hatred etc. can lead down a dark dorm of depression. Most things people post on social media were beautified to the best of the poster's ability and in many cases that portrait they’ve painted with their posts or pictures are far from reality. Social media is what we allow it to be in our life; it can be the get rich quick tool you’ve been looking for or the reason you think less of yourself. It can be a place to connect and meet friends or a place to attract unwanted attention. The effects that social media has on society are as eclectic as the people they impact. What we post affects the people who see it, whether that effect is positive or negative is a personal choice. What will you allow social media to be for you?
